NSRI warns beachgoers to take care during new moon spring tide

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has urged beachgoers to exercise caution during the new moon spring tide, which peaks on Saturday.

This natural phenomenon occurs when the sun, moon, and Earth align during the new moon phase, amplifying the gravitational pull on the Earth’s oceans.

The NSRI’s Andrew Ingram says it will significantly affect tidal conditions over the weekend.

“Higher high tides and lower low tides will be experienced throughout the weekend. Swimmers are urged to visit lifeguard protected beaches and anglers and hikers should exercise extreme caution, especially during the incoming and high tides in the late afternoon.”

He adds: “Follow tide schedules, stay informed of local weather updates from the South African Weather Services. And always prioritise safety. Be aware of rip currents. Rip currents are particularly strong during spring tides and especially during outgoing tides in the late afternoon.”
