NSRI to observe World Drowning Prevention Day on Friday

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) will join communities across South Africa and around the world to observe World Drowning Prevention Day on Friday.

This year’s theme, “Your story can save a life,” highlights the power of shared experiences in saving lives.

NSRI Communications Manager, Andrew Ingram, says over 200 000 people die in drowning incidents globally each year.

He says the NSRI continues to combat drowning through education, survival swimming, rescue buoys, and safety apps.

Ingram has urged South Africans to promote water safety.

“Too many families suffer preventable tragedies. The NSRI urges all South Africans to learn basic water safety, supervise children when they are in or near water, and share stories that inspire others to stay safe. Wear blue on Drowning Prevention Day. Share your story on social media and help us prevent drowning. Remember, anyone can drown, but no one should,” says Ingram.
