NSRI in W Cape rescues several at sea

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), in the Western Cape has rescued several people at sea, including two children. It has commended the role played by good Samaritans in saving lives.

Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, says two girls were rescued at Miller’s Point near Simon’s Town Beach. Lambinon says the girls, a five-year-old from Mitchells Plain and an eight-year-old from Hanover Park on the Cape Flats got into difficulty when their inflatable lilo deflated.

Three bystanders rescued them and performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). They were taken to hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

Earlier, a surf-skier from Durban was rescued after he fell out his craft and attempted to swim to shore between Roman Rock Lighthouse and Fish Hoek. A fellow surf-skier contacted the NSRI and he was brought ashore.

On Friday, two men from Mitchells Plain were rescued, also off Millers Point after they got into difficulty on an inflatable.

They were blown out to sea by a strong south-easterly wind.

Meanwhile, a search is continuing for a missing 16-year-old believed to have drowned at a beach at KwaMbonambi in Richard’s Bay, on the KwaZulu Natal north coast.

The NSRI were called out to a drowning in progress at the beach. One arrival, rescuers found the teenager had gone missing in the water after being caught in rip currents.
