NSFAS chairperson Dr. Stander resigns amid governance concerns

The DA has expressed concern over the abrupt resignation of the NSFAS Board Chairperson, Dr. Karen Stander.

Stander, who was appointed to lead the newly constituted NSFAS Board after the previous board was dissolved and placed under administration, tendered her resignation with immediate effect on Sunday.

According to the department, her resignation letter raises concerns about governance practices within NSFAS.

It also includes allegations of bullying, intimidation, racism, and threats to personal safety.

DA MP and spokesperson on Higher Education and Training, Dr. Delmaine Christians.

“Firstly, the minister has to establish an independent investigation into these allegations raised by Dr. Stander – preferably one that is led by a credible, external figure, it must have clear terms of reference, a set timeline and full transparency to parliament.”

Christians added: “Very importantly and secondly, he must present an operational stabilisation plan for NSFAS. And of course, importantly, protecting whistleblowers will be at the forefront.”
