NPO to march in Durban to mark World Autism Acceptance Month

Non-Profit Organisation “Action in Autism” are preparing to stage a silent walk to the Durban City Hall to mark World Autism Acceptance Month.

Participants will seek to advocate for patients’ rights and hand a memorandum to the City Mayor.

The campaign also features a series of workshops designed to improve the employment rate of people living with autism.

Action in Autism chairperson Liza Aziz says the walk will take place on April 23.

“We use the term acceptance because I think we’ve moved way beyond awareness. And to commemorate this month, we want to ensure that autistic people, neuro-diverse people, because it includes all people who have a different brain, that they are included in society on every level, in the workplace.”

“There’s not enough schools for our autistic people, so many of them are at home or they’re at stimulation centres. So, to create greater opportunity for our people, and of course, the rallying call is ‘nothing about us without us’.”
