NPA to reopen inquest into Steve Biko’s death

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will on Friday enrol the reopening of the inquest into the death of anti-Apartheid activist and Black Consciousness Movement founder and leader, Steve Biko.

Biko died 48 years ago on the 12th of September 1977 after he was allegedly tortured by the then apartheid regime.

A formal inquest was held in November 1977 which found that that Biko allegedly sustained the injuries during a scuffle with the Special Branch (SB) members.

To date, no one has been prosecuted for the death of Biko.

The NPA, in a statement on Thursday, says that the main goal of reopening the inquest is to lay before the court, evidence that will enable the court to make a finding as to whether the death was brought about by any act, or omission, which prima facie involves or amounts, to an offence on the part of any person.
