NPA Head admits struggles in finalising State Capture cases

Head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Adv Shamila Batohi has admitted that her department is experiencing challenges in finalising matters. She says South Africa is struggling with State Capture cases.

Speaking on SABC News’ Face the Nation programme on Thursday, the NPA head adds that there is an ongoing crisis of complex corruption cases in this country.

The extradition request by the NPA of the Gupta brothers was not successful. But Batohi says they can charge them at any time.

Several State Capture cases remain unresolved, partly due to reports that former Justice Minister Thembi Simelane declined the NPA’s request to extend the contract of Evidence Leader Adv Paul Pretorius.

There seems to be a problem with how much Pretorious is charging for his services.

Economic Freedom Fighters continues to demand the removal of senior counsel Mathew Chaskalson and Paul Pretorius, who were appointed as consultants for the NPA to lead prosecutions related to the State Capture Commission of Inquiry cases.

Batohi says the consequences of not finalising the State Capture cases are huge.
