More than 250 tuck shops in the North West were found to be non-compliant to the Standard Draft By-Laws that promote the development of township economies.
The provincial Department of Co-operative Governance conducted about 4 000 inspections at spaza shops across the province.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed all tuck shops and food handling facility owners to register their businesses at their respective municipalities.
This after a high number of cases of children who died after consuming food bought mostly at spaza shops were reported.
Head of the Department of Co-operative Governance in the North West, Dr Ben Bole, says about 73 spaza shops were shut down, while the department received about 8 000 applications for licenses.
“273 were found to be non-compliant and 73 of them, we had to shut them down with immediate effect. We can indicate that we have received 8000 plus applications, majority of them are foreigners who have actually applied. Out of the total of 8000, they can account for plus the region of 6000,” says Bole.
