North West road fatalities drop by 21%

The Department of Public Safety and Transport Management in the North West says the number of road fatalities has been reduced by 21%, compared to the same period last year.

The department says routes such as N4, N12, N14, N18, R30, R49, R503 and R556 remain problematic.

This was reported during the Safer Festive Season Operation held in Vryburg. The department further says the leading district in road crashes is Ngaka Modiri Molema, followed by Dr Kenneth Kaunda while Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati recorded fewer incidents.

In the statement, the department says many accidents in the Bojanala district were recorded in Mogwase, Bapong and Rustenburg town. In the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, accidents occur mostly in Mahikeng and Lichtenburg.

In the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and Dr. Ruth Segomopotsi Mompati districts, they take place in towns such as Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp Vryburg and Bloemhof. Meanwhile, the department says that they have intensified their visibility by increasing the number of officers working 24-hour shifts.

The department says that most of the incidents are caused by excessive speeding, overtaking on barrier lines and driving unroadworthy vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape Mobility Department says motorist safety remains a top priority as festive season traffic volumes increase. Provincial Minister Isaac Sileku says traffic authorities are working closely with local municipalities to manage congestion, implement alternative routes and ensure the safe movement of road users.

“I must say we are very encouraged by the cooperation and collaboration from the motorists. They are very patient and I really would want to urge and encourage them to be patient with us as we are dealing with the matter,” says Sileku.
