Nomvula Mokonyane urges compliance following Vanderbijlpark crash

African National Congress (ANC) First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane has called on the scholar transport fraternity to ensure compliance in honour of the fourteen learners who perished in a horrific crash involving their minibus taxi and a truck.

Mokonyane was speaking to SABC News during a candlelight and prayer ceremony held in remembrance of the deceased in Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg.

A 22-year-old man, who was the learners’ scholar transport driver, briefly appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court facing fourteen charges of murder, three of attempted murder, and contravening the country’s permit and licencing laws.

Mokonyane says the deaths of the learners have not only affected the people of the Vaal but have also touched the entire nation.

“Let’s make sure that in their honour there is compliance from those who ferry our children, but secondly, we make sure their certainty that everyone who ferries our kids will bring our kids safe. For now, let’s rally behind the families and make sure we give a decent sendoff, we lend a hand as the ANC Women’s League has done, working together with Cosas and many other organisations in giving the necessary support and for that we are quite humbled as the ANC,” says Mokonyane.
