One of the organisers of a vigil in solidarity with journalists in Gaza, Mohammed Zahid Hassan says there is no justification for killing or targeting journalists in the war-torn country.
Currently, South African journalists are staging a demonstration outside Al Jazeera offices in Auckland Park, Johannesburg to show solidarity with their counterparts in Palestine.
This follows an Israeli air strike last Wednesday that killed six reporters, including Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh.
The United Nations reports that at least 242 journalists have been killed in Palestine since 7 October 2023.
Hassan says the attacks show Israel is acting with impunity.
“But we shouldn’t forget that there has been five other journalists that had been killed as well, so this vigil for the six that were killed on Sunday but also for the journalists everywhere that are undergoing difficulty and oppression in being able to do their job.”
