Former US Ambassador to South Africa, Ebrahim Rasool.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) says it hasn’t received a formal communique from the United States of America regarding the deployment of a new US ambassador to South Africa.
US President Donald Trump has nominated Brent Bozell III to be Washington’s ambassador to South Africa.
This follows a decision by the Trump administration to expel the former ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, following remarks he made in a webinar linking President Trump to white supremacy.
DIRCO Minister Ronald Lamola’s spokesperson Chrispin Phiri says South Africa will continue to push to mend relations with the US.
“We wouldn’t comment on the internal processes of the United States as we understand it still has to go through their own internal mechanism. We wouldn’t comment as yet until we have officially received the accreditation requirements, and we will take it from there. The US is a strategic partner of South Africa economically as well as the values we share. We will continue to pursue that strategic relationship and deepen it where possible.”
