The Nelson Mandela University (NMU) has welcomed the life sentence handed down by the George Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape to a former student, for the murder of a fellow student at the George campus in June last year.
Earlier this year, 24-year-old Luyanda Mahlanza was found guilty of murdering Zimkhitha Ntshisela.
Ntshisela was stabbed several times at her residence on campus.
NMU spokesperson Zandile Ngwendu says the sentencing concludes a dark chapter for the university.
Ngwendu says the university community continues to mourn the loss of Zimkhitha, a young, gifted woman whose life was violently and unjustly cut short.
“We recognise the deep emotional toll that this tragedy has had on her family and loved ones. The sentencing reflects the seriousness of the crime and underscores the justice system’s role in holding individuals accountable for their actions. While it can never undo the pain and loss, we hope that it brings a measure of justice and closure,” adds Ngwendu.
