NMU students protest over financial aid, registration clearance

1 minute

Protesting students have disrupted the first day of academic activities at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.

They have blockaded the road leading to the South Campus with burning tyres and debris.

The students are protesting delays in financial aid clearance and registration for classes and accommodation.

Student Representative Council (SRC) president, Lathitha Mbuzwana, says they have exhausted all avenues to engage with management.

“So, we want them to clear students one, to respond to concessions, to fast track the appeals of concessions to ensure that students are deserving to receive allowances, to ensure that students have accommodation and a place to stay, so that the academic year can begin.”

At the time of the broadcast, the SABC was still waiting for a comment from the university.
