The Kimberley Harriers running club has described the seventh night trail run fundraising it hosted in partnership with SanParks as successful. About 150 runners from different clubs joined the initiative, which included exploring scenic trails at the Rooifontein Game Reserve.
The money raised will assist honorary rangers who volunteer at SanParks across the Northern Cape. The running club’s deputy chairperson Farrell Moses says the club finds it extremely imperative to preserve such facilities so that the next generations can also be able to enjoy the fauna and flora and the wildlife.
“The even is largely to raise funds and give it as one of our charity events to honorary rangers where they will sort of utilise the funds where they seem necessary,” says Moses.

SanParks has about 2500 volunteers who are called honorary rangers.
They assist with preserving their national parks and keeping animals and plants safe from poaching. Hestia Swanepoel and Mathilda Swanepoel are honorary rangers.
“SANParks honorary rangers is a volunteer organisation. Everything we do is dependant of funds and this is why events such as this Harriers night run is essential for us. Everything we do comes from our own pockets with no one cent coming in and we are here to help reserve the national parks in South Africa. We also assist smaller parks and communities around the SANParks,” says honorary ranger, Hestia Swanepoel.
