Three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, Nigeria, completed the group stage of the 2025 edition of the tournament in Morocco with the perfect record.
The Super Eagles beat Uganda 3-1 in Fes for their third win from as many matches.
Nigeria, who last won Africa’s football showpiece in 2013, showed intent from the start. They were initially denied by Uganda’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, Denis Onyango.
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper proved his worth, but not even he could prevent Nigeria from going one-nil up just before the half hour mark.
Paul Onuachu rounded off a move started down the left flank, to give the Group C log leaders a one-nil advantage at half time.
Onyango, who picked up an injury late in the first half, was replaced at the restart and his replacement Salim Magoola was then red carded just before the hour mark.
With third choice keeper Alionzi Nafian in goal, Nigeria’s Raphael Onyedika scored twice in five minutes for a commanding three-nil lead.
The Super Eagles conceded a late goal, but will head into their Round of 16 match, brimming with confidence and now one of the tournament favourites.
