Chilean golfer Joaquin Niemann booked his place in the US Open when he won the LIV Golf Mexico City tournament by three strokes.
While on the PGA Tour, American pair Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin picked up maiden wins on tour when they won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event.
Niemann shot a final round 6 under par 65 to clinch a third championship of the season at LIV Golf Mexico City.
He started the final day two strokes off the lead, however three birdies going out and another four on the back nine saw him finish with a 3 shot advantage. Not even a bogey at the 14th could slow the Torque GC captain down, as he finished on 16 under for the tournament.
It’s his third tournament win this season and a record-equalling fifth of his LIV Golf career. He is in the lead for the individual championship this season; he narrowly missed the title last year to Spain’s Jon Rahm. And to cap a superlative day’s play, Niemann has a spot in the US Open in June as well.
Lucas Herbert and Bryson DeChambeau finished in a tie for second at 13 under. The Australian, Herbert, was particularly impressive with a 10-under-par 61 in a late charge to try to catch Niemann.
Meanwhile, on the PGA Tour, Americans Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin were first-time winners on tour when they came up victorious at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event by a single stroke.
The pair shot a final round one under par, 71, in a round that teetered until the seventeenth hole when they went ahead in the birdie to bogey count to break par for the round.
The American duo fended off Danish twins Rasmus and Nicolai Hojgaard, who came up just short after a final round 4 under 68 that saw them finish at 27 under for the tournament.
The win was particularly sweet for Novak after he lost out at RBC Heritage a week ago in a playoff.
“I’m so excited; I mean, you don’t know how many chances you are going to get. I knew I was playing well after last week. It was tough to just come back and do this. I’m glad Ben was with me. We had a lot of six am mornings at Sea Island doing two-a-day stuff like that. We put in so much work and to see him play like he did down the stretch, it was awesome,” says Zurich Classic winner Andrew Novak.
Defending champions Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Shane Lowry of Ireland finished in a tie for 12th place at 22 under par.
Better together 🤝@AndrewNovakGolf and @BenGriffinGolf come full circle to become the second duo to each earn their maiden TOUR victories at the @Zurich_Classic.
