NFP to formally announce exit from KZN GPU

The National Freedom Party (NFP) leadership will hold a media briefing to address the party’s position regarding its participation in the KwaZulu-Natal Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).

In a statement, the party said it will discuss its official withdrawal from the coalition government.

The party has already instructed its sole representative, Mbali Shinga, to resign from her position as MEC for Social Development.

She is accused of defying party orders during the December vote of no confidence against Premier Thami Ntuli which was brought forth by the MK Party.

KwaZuluNatal Legislature Speaker Nontembeko Boyce says they have not received any notice of changes to the executive, following the National Freedom Partys instruction to its provincial chairperson, Mbali Shinga, to resign as MEC for Social Development.

Political analyst Zakhele Ndlovu from UKZN says with the NFP’s withdrawal in KZN GPU, this fragility could force fresh negotiations or even early provincial elections.
