New drone technology, which is the first of its kind in Africa, has been launched in Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape.
The initiative in the Kouga Municipality aims to combat high crime levels in the area.
The new technology will assist in ensuring a fast-tracked response to crimes in a municipality that is seeing a rise in gang-related activities.
Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Andrew Whitfield says technology will lead to more successful prosecutions.
“There has been a deployment of more police officers into the province but not all municipalities received them. So, if a municipality can take responsibility for a safety and security function like Kouga has, I think deploying drones is a major step in being the first response to prevent crime from a surveillance perspective and make sure that there is evidence of crime to lead to successful prosecution. I think this kind of innovation should be rolled out in more municipalities,” says Whitfield.
