The new Alfred Nzo District Municipality Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo addresses members during a special council meeting after being elected into the position on 03 February 2026.
The Alfred Nzo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape has announced a new mayor. Tsileng Sobuthongo takes over after the resignation of Vukile Mhlelembana last year.
The municipality secured a R1.6 billion budget, with 70% of it directed towards operations.
Sobuthongo says water will be prioritised under her administration.
She says a sizable percentage of rural communities still have no access to clean water.
“The responsibility is now huge to understand the challenges our district is facing. Challenges of water, challenges of sanitation backlog. I reflected on those basically. Water is a basic service and when we have the community of Alfred Nzo that is still behind in terms of access to water, it is something that must continue to haunt us on a daily basis.”
Meanwhile, municipal manager Zamile Sikhundla says they now want clean governance after being tainted with fraud and corruption allegation over the years.
