The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has stated that load reduction is under review, as it was never intended to be implemented on a constant basis.
NERSA and several organizations are presenting oral submissions to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on the impact of load reduction on poor and historically disadvantaged communities.
The three-day SAHRC inquiry is taking place in Sandton, Johannesburg. NERSA Regulatory Specialist Vuyiswa Magubane explained that while the current power rationing aligns with the code of practice for load reduction, the review will focus on its implementation to minimize negative impacts on paying customers.
Magubane says, “It must be highlighted that it wasn’t necessarily envisioned that load reduction will be implemented to the extent that we are seeing today. It was envisioned that it would be for emergencies. In response to the increasing levels of load reduction we are seeing, the NRS committee, I made reference to which NERSA is a member of, is currently formulating a way to address the issues that have been identified.”
“This review would then take into account ensuring that licensees are guided on how to properly implement load reduction without adversely affecting paying customers.”
