NERSA rejects Eskom 36% tariff increase proposal

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) says it has rejected Eskom’s 36% tariff increase application.

The power utility applied for a substantial increase in August.

Nersa says its decision to reject the application comes after consultation with stakeholders.

There was widespread criticism of Eskom’s tariff increase application.

Eskom had asked for a 36 % increase in electricity tariffs for the 2025 financial year.

This would be followed by 12 % for the 2026/27 financial year and an increase of 9% for 2027/2028.

If approved, the price hike would have allowed Eskom to collect R446 billion in revenue in 2026, R495 billion in 2027, and R537 billion in 2028.
