South Africans who wish to give their views at the National Energy Regulator’s public hearing regarding Eskom’s application to amend the losses charge calculation methodology for embedded generators may submit their requests by the 17th of November.
NERSA has announced that it has published a consultation paper following Eskom’s application.
NERSA Spokesperson, Charles Hlebela, says Eskom intends to implement the amended methodology in the 2026/27 financial year’s Schedule of Standard Tariffs.
Hlebela says that a virtual public hearing for oral representations on Eskom’s application will be held on 24 November.
“The proposed change aims to modify the existing formula for calculating technical losses incurred by embedded generators connected to the Eskom distribution network, ensuring that it better reflects the actual costs based on recent technical studies. The generator losses charge is the cost that electricity generators pay to account for power lost when transporting electricity through the grid,” says Hlebela.
NERSA in August clarified calculation errors in its earlier multi-year price determination for Eskom, that resulted in higher electricity tariffs totalling R54 billion for 2026 and 2027.
Prices for the distribution and transmission businesses were calculated correctly. However figures for generation were omitted.
