Nersa explains electricity tariff blunder

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has sought to explain its calculation blunders in its earlier multi-year price determination for Eskom, which will lead to higher than previously announced electricity tariffs in 2026 and 2027.

The revised tariff hike follows an out-of-court settlement between the regulator and Eskom.

The steeper than initially announced 5% and 6%, respectively, allows Eskom to recover an additional R54 billion over the next two financial years.

NERSA’s Executive Manager for Electricity, Rhulani Mathebula says, “We had to go back to our numbers and look at what exactly did we miss, when we pronounced the price increases for 2026 and ’27. So, all prices were done properly and correctly, for the distribution business as well as the transmission business.”

“But there were certain figures that were actually omitted when we made the decision for generation and that is where this R54 billion actually comes from. These results have an impact of 3.26% for the 2026 year and actually 2.6% for the 2027 year, for the consumers.”
