Members of Nehawu on strike.
The National Health, Education and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) is expected to lead a march and handover a memorandum of grievances to Premier Lazarus Mokgosi in the North West on Friday.
NEHAWU says they are forced to act after seven of its members were fired for participating in a legal protest action at the North West Parks and Tourism Board.
This follows Mokgosi’s alleged failure to intervene despite numerous calls by the union for him to take action against the MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism, Bitsa Lenkopane.
Employees demand salary increments, the rescinding of the suspension of some of its members and an end to the late payments of salaries.
NEHAWU’S regional deputy secretary in Mahikeng, Kealeboga Dikobe says the union took it up on itself to follow all necessary steps to ensure it attains the certificate to strike.
“The entity has had six acting CEOs. We then saw it as NEHAWU to seek the audience of the HOD and MEC of DEDECT. However, to our dismay we are yet to receive the audience of both the HOD and the MEC. So, NEHAWU took it upon itself to follow all the necessary steps to ensure that we attain a certificate to strike, which we did. To our dismay the now acting CEO Jonathan Denga decided to end employment contracts of seven comrades.”
