The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) has refuted claims by Democratic Alliance (DA) MP, Mark Burke, that Parliament cleaners earn a monthly salary of R30 000.
Burke made the remarks during a parliamentary briefing yesterday.
Nehawu’s Parliamentary Chairperson Sthembiso Tembe says the current salary for cleaners is approximately R12 000.
He says even with ongoing salary increases, the wages will never reach R30 000.
“It’s very painful that we have to respond to this disgraceful and fabricated exaggerated comments from this Member of Parliament from the Democratic Alliance. The current salary of the cleaners in Parliament is less than R13 000, it’s plus or minus R12 000 as it stands.
And even with the agreement that we reached with the management of Parliament that there needs to be incremental improvement of the salaries, it won’t get closer to that because the 10% that they got in December was only R1 000.”
