Members of NEHAWU picketing
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) in KwaZulu-Natal will today march and submit a memorandum of demands to the Department of Water and Sanitation highlighting concerns over poor working conditions.
The union’s Durban Regional Secretary, Prince Mthalane, says one of the reasons that they will be protesting, is that workers in the department have no designated workspaces and are not given tools to carry out their duties.
“Workers currently within the department in KZN, have no designated workplace because their offices were burned down in October 2023, so they have been told to work remotely. There has been no communication from the senior management in terms of what is happening so workers are frustrated, they are tired of this arrangement.
Mthalane adds: “Some of these workers who have been told to work remotely, don’t even have laptops or computers, they have no tools of trade or even cell phones. So, we are demanding that the new premises must be opened as soon as possible so that workers can report to work.”
