The community of Kwa-Thema in Springs on the East Rand became the latest township to be blessed with the state-of-the-art of the art multi-purpose sports facility.
Betway Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs, in partnership with Nedbank, unveiled the facility at the Phulong Secondary School in Kwa-Thema this afternoon.
Amakhosi had the privilege of being part of the proceedings by the virtue of being 2025 Nedbank Cup champions.
Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung, says they chose the school because of their strategic partnership with the women’s team, Springs Home Sweepers Football Club, who will be training there.
“We are very deliberate in our choice. The facility is not only helping the school or the community, but also to give facilities to women’s football and that’s we made sure that Home Sweepers train in a suitable field,” she says.
Over the past few years, Chiefs and Home Sweepers have forged a collaborative relationship, sharing insights and working closely to uplift the women’s football landscape.
Home Sweepers owner and former Banyana Banyana coach, Joseph Mkhonza, appreciated the efforts of his former team, Amakhosi.
“We appreciate everything Chiefs has done for this community. Chiefs had six former players from this community. This community deserve better than what they’ve have been getting,” says Mkhonza.
And the initiative was also welcomed by the Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe.
“Partnership should be fostered with private sector and this is stepping towards the right direction and we appreciate Chiefs and Nedbank for this initiative,” says Mabe.
Lindokuhle Gumbi, one of the learners at Phulong Secondary School, was grateful for the facility.
“As a school we feel grateful because we don’t receive sponsors, because of the area we are in and hopefully, this will inspire dreams for many people,” notes Gumbi.
Chiefs have also handed over sport attire and a framed shirt to school.
