NEC visit to KZN is to assess rebuilding efforts: ANC

The ANC says its National Executive Committee (NEC) visit to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is aimed at assessing the provincial leadership’s work and rebuilding the party ahead of this year’s local government elections.

The NEC, led by Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, is meeting with 11 provincial branches this weekend.

Speaking on the sidelines of these meetings earlier in Durban, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu conceded the party is concerned about the slow pace of its recovery following its recent electoral decline.

She says changes to the current provincial leadership are not off the table as the party works to strengthen its structures.

“The NEC made a commitment that we will make regular visits to the province of KwaZulu-Natal. So, it is nothing untoward. It is nothing that needs to give any speculation. There’s nothing that’s off the table. We are still in meeting with the regions. We have to take this report to the National Working Committee. There may be changes, I can’t rule that out. We are concerned at the pace of the rebuilding process, that is why this engagement is so important.”
