SAPS recover firearms, ammunition and an undisclosed amount of coins during anti-extortion operation in the Western Cape on October 14, 2024.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) says nearly 1500 extortion cases have been reported in the country since April.
Gauteng, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape have recorded the highest number of cases.
Nationally 658 arrests have been made.
SAPS Head of Detectives, Lieutenant-General Khosi Senthumule Mchunu, shared their plan to curb escalating extortion in the country with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police.
Mchunu says that they have been mobilising specialised resources that they have sent to the provinces where the threat of violence has outstripped local police capabilities.
