Police search a vehicle
Northern Cape police say they will intensify crime combating campaigns including roadblocks during the festive season.
Police have announced that various government department’s including Home Affairs, and the South African National Defence Force are among those who will be joining in to curb criminal activities around the province.
Police have warned citizens that they will be dealt with harshly if they fail to abide by the law this festive season. The Safer Festive Season Operation is in full swing in all five districts of the Northern Cape.
Operations that include regular roadblocks, stop and searches, tracing of wanted suspects and the heightened police visibility will be the order of the day in the province.
Police have announced that illegal miners and individuals who are operating illegal liquor businesses will not be spared.
“With the law enforcement agencies, we will be static as well as visible. We will be looking at driver fatigue, roadworthiness of the vehicles, speeding and drunk and driving. This is a warning to our would-be speeders we will be on major roads of the province,” says Mashay Gamieldien, Northern Cape Police, head of communication.
Police say over 5 226 vehicles and 13 155 persons were stopped and searched since the beginning of high-density operations.
A Bolt driver ran out of luck when he was arrested for allegedly not having proper documentation to be in the country.
Police also stated that his vehicle did not have proper documents.
A local crime combating NGO says they will work closely with law enforcement agencies.
“There have been cases of kidnapping and now also cars but with SAPS conducting these operations it means we are heading for right direction,” says Crime Combating NGOs Sthembiso Yanta.
Police say the high-density operation will last until the new year.
Deputy Minister of Police, Polly Boshielo is expected to visit Kimberley on Saturday to participate in some of the operations.
