The Northern Cape Department of Basic Education has urged law enforcement agencies to deal harshly with matriculants who organise ‘pens down’ parties after finishing their exams.

The department says it will work closely with police and parents to discourage learners from participating in any gatherings of learners.

It says no major incidents were reported during the 2024 matric examinations in the province.

Northern Cape Education MEC Abraham Vosloo is expected to officially open marking centres on Sunday.

Provincial spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe says, “The release of the provincial matric results will take place on Tuesday, 14 January 2025 in Kimberley. The department has cautioned grade 12 learners not to attend “pens down” parties.”

“We have further appealed to parents to discourage these parties as it may impact negatively on a child’s future. The department is calling on law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for these parties and we encourage school communities to report it to the SAPS.”
