Offices of Mafube Local Municipality.
Workers at Mafube Local Municipality in the Free State are calling for national government to take over the administration of the municipality.
Municipal workers affiliated to South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and Independent Municipal & Allied Trade Union (IMATU) have again downed tools over unpaid salaries, and non-payment of third parties.
In January last year, the Free State High Court ordered Mafube to pay the Municipal Workers’ Retirement fund R14 million plus interest.
That order followed the municipality’s failure to comply with previous court orders dating back to 2011.
IMATU branch Chairperson Tshepo Tsotetsi says, “We also demand that the municipality provides us with adequate tools of trade so that we can be able to provide adequate services to the community because if we don’t have the tools of trade, we are unable to fulfil our obligation to provide services to the community. We request that national intervene in Mafube by dissolving the council and come with a financial injection.”
