A one-stop Border Post Bill is being debated in the National Assembly, with lawmakers discussing its potential to improve border management.
The Bill aims to make it easier for people and goods to move legally across borders while cracking down on illegal activity.
The Bill’s proponents argue that it could boost trade, ease congestion and enhance South Africa’s competitiveness in the region.
Concerns were also raised about the Bill’s potential impact on security and human dignity at borders.
Rise Mzansi Chief Organiser and National Assembly Caucus Whip, Makashule Gana says, “The co-operation at SADC level, especially in our immediate neighbours is very critical because if anyone that enters South Africa through the land border post, they then pass through the SADC region or they pass through our neighbours.”
Gana adds: “You need to ensure that not only on the South African side, but also the borders of our neighbouring countries with those ones also need to work, that’s how we’re going to start having a lot more controlled migration, but also documented foreign nationals, which will in a way ease the tensions, especially in our country.”
