The National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) says families should support matriculants when their examination results are published in newspapers.
The High Court in Pretoria is expected to rule on Wednesday in the case between the Information Regulator and the Department of Basic Education. The matter relates to the release of the 2024 matric results on forums including newspapers.
The regulator says the publishing of the 2024 matric results which will be released on Monday would violate the learners’ right to privacy. But the department says it has been publishing them for a long time, without issues.
NASGB’s general-secretary, Matakanye Matakanya says, “When these children go to the school and collect the results, then there will be some, some of them are friends. Then when this child is among the friends and all, they only find out how she or he has failed, then among the friends, then the shortest route is to commit suicide to avoid embarrassment. We are saying by doing that, every individual will know the outcome of that and particularly if then the child is among the parents who will quickly council the child and guide the child.”
