A 57-year-old Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Kakamas Regional Court for raping an 11-year-old girl in 2022.
The man accosted the minor at Augrabies when she was walking home. When the child refused to accompany him to the shop, he forcefully dragged her into the nearby veld where he raped her.

“The accused accosted the young girl in Augrabies on 27 November 2022 at approximately 18:00 when she was walking home. When the child refused to accompany him to the shop, he forcefully grabbed her into the nearby veld where he raped her, then fled the scene. The victim reported the incident to her mother, who alerted the police. The accused was subsequently traced and arrested. He was sentenced to 18 years direct imprisonment for rape and three months for common assault. The sentences will run concurrently,” says provincial police spokesperson Cherelle Ehlers.
