N Cape court sentences 37-year-old to 25 years for killing girlfriend


A Northern Cape man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Victoria West Regional Court for stabbing and killing his girlfriend.

37-year-old Jan Jonkers stabbed 31-year-old Charlene Tieties with a knife at their residence in January.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergio Kock says Tieties succumbed to her injuries in hospital. “The incident occurred on Thursday, January 30, at approximately 00:30, when the accused viciously assaulted and stabbed the victim with a knife at their residence.

Despite being rushed to hospital for urgent medical care, Charlene Tieties succumbed to her injuries at approximately 01:30. Jonkers fled the scene but was apprehended later that same day. His bail application was denied.

On July 31, Jonkers was convicted and sentenced to 25 years’ direct imprisonment for murder.”
