Northern Cape Mental Health hospital
A task team has been established to implement the recommendations of the Health Ombudsman following the release of a report into the state of care at two Northern Cape Hospitals.
Two psychiatric patients lost their lives at the Kimberley Mental Hospital and Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital. Another two suffered severe health complications.
The task team, assembled by Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul will be chaired by the provincial Director General, Justice Bekebeke.
Saul has apologised to the families.
Premier spokesperson, Naledi Gaosekwe, “The report released last week by the Health Ombudsman has brought to the fore the major governance inadequacies, violation of clinical protocols and financial mismanagement at both the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe hospital and the Northern Cape Mental Health hospital.
Having studied the report and after a number of consultations, the Premier has instructed the Director General of the province, Mr. Justice Bekebeke, to chair the task team set up to ensure full implementation of the recommendations by the Health Ombudsman.
The Premier has also instructed the MEC to provide him with an update on the immediate actions to be taken as recommended by the Health Ombudsman in its report, within seven days.”
