Muzi Sibiya’s cross-examination to continue in Meyiwa trial

Accused number one in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Muzi Sibiya, is expected back on the witness stand at the High Court in Pretoria for cross-examination.

On Wednesday, State Prosecutor George Baloyi probed Sibiya about the alleged assault he says he suffered at the hands of the police.

Sibiya and four others are on trial for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain.

Sibiya has reiterated that he was repeatedly assaulted and tortured following his arrest in May 2020.

The assault is said to have included kicking and face suffocation with a plastic bag.

State Prosecutor George Baloyi asked Sibiya if the plastic bag allegedly used to suffocate him was laced with pepper spray, as previously mentioned by his former legal representatives.

However, Sibiya could not confirm the pepper spray allegations.

Sibiya said that despite being kicked multiple times, he was in pain but had no visible injuries.

He says the only scars he is left with five years later are on his wrists as a result of the tight handcuffs.

Advocate Baloyi is expected to zoom in on inconsistencies in his testimony.
