Accused number one in the Senzo Meyiwa trial Muzi Sibiya.
The accused number one in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, Muzi Sibiya, says he plans to appeal his convictions for possession of drugs and ammunition. The drug charge dates back to 2019, when Sibiya was found in possession of ten sachets of drugs in Tembisa.
Sibiya was arrested again in May 2020 after police found live ammunition in his shack in Tembisa. That’s when he is alleged to have made admissions about his involvement in the murder of Meyiwa.
He was found guilty of drug possession and of illegal ammunition.
Sibiya is currently under cross-examination in the High Court in Pretoria, where he and four of his co-accused are on trial for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain.
Responding to state prosecutor George Baloyi, Sibiya maintains his innocence despite the guilty verdicts.
“I maintained my innocence up to this stage; I still maintain my innocence with regard to those charges. And the reason for my appeal not to proceed is because I want to finalise this matter first, and then I would appeal. Although the court came and reached a particular conclusion, I maintain that I knew nothing about those charges.”
