Accused one, Muzi Sibiya on the stand at the Senzo Meyiwa trial.
Accused number one in the Senzo Meyiwa trial, Muzi Sibiya, says he was at his homestead in KwaZulu-Natal in October 2014 when Meyiwa was murdered.
However, the state’s key witness, Constable Sizwe Zungu, has testified that all five accused were at a hostel in Vosloorus on Gauteng’s East Rand on the day of the murder.
The goalkeeper was shot and killed while at the parental home of his then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus.
Responding to questions from defence counsel Zithulele Nxumalo at the High Court in Pretoria, Sibiya refutes claims that he was in Gauteng on the day in question.
Nxumalo: “If you can remember, where were you on 26 October 2014?”
Sibiya: “I cannot remember the exact place where I was on the 26th of October during the year 2014. However, I must spend most of my time being at home….I would therefore (only) come to Gauteng to do something. Then after that, I’ll return back home. However, when this news came up, I was back at home.”
Meanwhile, Sibiya says he was always in communication with accused four, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, as they were checking in on each other.
Sibiya, who says he’s related to Maphisa, has not denied the communication between 2018 and 2020 as per the state’s evidence.
The records, however, do not show any interaction between them on the day of the alleged hit.
Sibiya is expected back on the stand when the trial resumes on Monday.
