Multi-billion rand Tongaat-Hulett fraud case postponed to September

The multi-billion rand fraud case against six former executives of the embattled sugar giant Tongaat-Hulett and an auditor has been postponed to 10 September for a pre-trial hearing.

The accused appeared briefly in the Durban High Court on Thursday.

The long-standing case, which dates back to 2019, is linked to the alleged manipulation of business funds amounting to R3.5 billion.

The accused allegedly backdated land sale agreements between March 2015 and September 2018 to falsely inflate company profits, leading to improper bonuses.

Their appearance comes as an application for the company’s provisional liquidation has been set down to be heard on Friday.
