Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg.
Police have confirmed that a charge will be added to the existing allegations against the son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and the co-accused.
Twenty-eight-year-old Bellarmine “Chatunga” Mugabe and another man were arrested last week after a 23-year-old man was shot at Mugabe’s son’s house in Hyde Park in Johannesburg.
The suspects who will appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning are facing a charge of attempted murder.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says, “Indeed, the firearm that was used in the commission of crime has not been found. As we already indicated last week, the two suspects, aged 28 and 33 years old, have been arrested for attempted murder and they will be appearing today in this same magistrate’s court.”
Nevhuhulwi says, “It will be for attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice since the firearm has not been found. So we are expecting them to appear anytime soon, from now on, once the court proceeding starts, so the docket will be brought to this magistrate’s court. That is correct. They will be facing charges of attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.”
One of Mugabe’s supporters, who does not want to be named, hopes he will be granted bail while police investigate allegations against him.
He says he has known Mugabe junior for a long time.
“No, what I am expecting is police to do their investigation, let him out if he is not linked. I am not saying he did or didn’t do it, police must do their work. The gun was not found, it didn’t disappear, it was not found.”
