Mpumalanga’s Health Department says it recorded lower numbers of malaria cases this financial year, with three people dying in the Lowveld region.
The three victims contracted the disease in Bushbuckridge, City of Mbombela, and Nkomazi, respectively.
The department has embarked on an awareness campaign to educate communities about the symptoms of malaria, which include fever, muscle ache and nausea.
Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini says the department has recorded just over 1 000 cases compared to the last financial year of t 2 078 cases.
“We are doing well as far as malaria is concerned. Last year we registered 2578 cases, and in this financial year ending now, we only registered 1067 cases, which is a 59% decrease, meaning that we are doing very well. And what is good is that in terms of deaths, in the last financial year we had 21 deaths, but this financial year we 24/25 have only registered three cases – one, one, one per municipality.”
