Traffic volumes are high on South Africa’s roads.
Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu has commended the commitment of law enforcement officials who are out in numbers ensuring safety on the roads, as traffic volumes start to increase.
About 143 people have been killed on the province’s roads since the start of December to January. This represents an increase of 21 cases compared to the same period last year.
Ndlovu led a roadblock on the N4 toll road in Alkmaar, just outside Mbombela. He says motorists are not adhering to traffic laws but says he is pleased to see traffic officers hard at work.
“I am very happy on the work that our officials are doing. Since I have arrived here, some few hours ago, I realised that they are doing a very good job. They want to ensure that that drivers they’ve got all the proper papers, they want to ensure that all these cars that they are roadworthy. So, I am happy. Cars that are not roadworthy are impounded, drivers that they don’t have proper documents, drivers that are driving while they are drinking liquor, they’ve been arrested here.”
