The Mpumalanga Department of Education is monitoring exams in the Mkhondo Local Municipality after a severe storm damaged school infrastructure on Sunday night.

The storm affected power lines, residential buildings and schools in the area, with damage reported at three schools, impacting eight classrooms, a kitchen and a hostel.

Mpumalanga Education MEC Cathy Dlamini visited the affected schools, including Piet Retief Combined School, where five mobile classrooms were damaged.

Dlamini says, “No learner was hurt. Here again, there’s a lot of damage, especially in the hostel. And I am also told that learners were here. None of them were hurt. But the damage is huge. We thank the executive mayor that if needs be, they are going to use a community hall until we finish our exams but now none of them were affected whatsoever.”
