Authorities in Mpumalanga have declared war against men who are killing and abusing women in the province. The province has launched the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children in Elukwatini.

The provincial government has developed a crime prevention strategy aimed at paying special attention to the scourge.

Community Safety, Security and Liasion MEC Jacky Macie says they are calling on communities to work together with the government to fight the scourge.

“The cases that are more reported here obviously is GBV therefore it is important that we start where we are coming from because the perpetrators that we are talking about come from our households, the community at large we are saying to collaborate let’s come together and identify the scourge we must able to and isolate the perpetrators and deduct from our society and take them to prison.”

Meanwhile, the Badplaas Shelter has revealed that many of their cases are those of violence against women and children but are not being reported.

The centre’s manager Nomvula Motaung says many women and children are being abused by their partners and close relatives.

“The women don’t want to open the cases as a shelter we are providing them with the skills and the counseling. As we talked about the skills, we just offered our victims and survivors the baking course, and catering, and for some of our clients, we have offered them to go and train for security services and registered them under CIRA. We are doing that so that they cannot rely on those men who violate them.”
