Motsepe launches new elite African club competition

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has announced the launch of a new elite club competition aimed at strengthening African football.

The African Nations League, which will be contested by clubs across the continent, is set to kick off in September. The competition is also expected to attract African players currently plying their trade overseas, helping to retain and bring back top talent to the continent.

Motsepe made the announcement during a media briefing in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

He also reveals that, starting after the 2027 AFCON, the tournament will revert to a four‑year cycle beginning with the 2029 edition.

In a further boost to African football, Motsepe confirmed that AFCON prize money will increase to 10 million US dollars, up from the current $7 million.
