Mothibi says State Capture, Madlanga, SIU cases prioritised

National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Andy Mothibi says the organisation remains committed to prioritising cases related to the State Capture and Madlanga Commission as well as Special Investigating Unit (SIU) referral cases.

Mothibi says they are strengthening cooperation with their strategic partners and the public in efforts to combat and prevent crime across the country.

He says of the 24 State Capture cases under investigation, 12 have been enrolled for prosecution.

Mothibi earlier briefed the media in Pretoria on the NPA’s strategic priorities, including the implementation of its Quick Wins Action Plan and other key initiatives aimed at strengthening prosecutorial capacity.

“On the Madlanga Commission, the president issued a statement where he referred a number of officials for investigation. Those are receiving attention. We are cooperating with the SAPS. We have given them a task team. We have handed them two prosecutors, for the Madlanga Commission a number officials I think they are eight or so.”

Meanwhile, Mothibi emphasised that filling critical vacancies within the NPA remains a priority. He says this is to improve the institution’s capacity to carry out its mandate effectively.

“In terms of capacity, we have 17% vacancies rate, and as I said we cannot work like that.  And all the deputy National Director of Prosecution roles are all vacant. We cannot run an organisation with an empty Exco. We are moving very fast to make sure that those vacancies are filled. And going down in other divisions, DPPs to the provinces I said to them they must come up with a resourcing plan.”
