Morero blames syndicates for Johannesburg’s hijacked buildings

Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Dada Morero, says powerful syndicates are behind the City’s hijacked buildings. He says the municipality is working with police and stakeholders to dismantle them.

Johannesburg currently has approximately 200 hijacked buildings in its inner city. These structures, are often illegally occupied by criminal syndicates, represent a severe humanitarian and safety crisis marked by hazardous living conditions, and lack of basic services.

Morero says they’re working on addressing challenges related to hijacked buildings.

“We just need to accelerate on the programs that we are doing in the inner city. Challenge of hijacked buildings are there they are huge we are focusing on the bad buildings. However, I must upfront indicate that we got a constitutional court judgement which says once we evacuate from a building you must provide alternative accommodation. But it is also important to note that there are huge syndicates that are involved in bad buildings and hijacking of buildings and we need to find a way working saps to crackdown these syndicates.”
